Looking into Modern Architecture 1 OF 2

Architecture is as old as civilization itself. Many ancient civilizations are identified closely with the architectural structures during that period like those of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Through the centuries, architecture evolved both as a form of science and art. Many styles and trends have been developed in the world of architecture. From the simple vernacular architecture (the unrefined type that emerged out of need and availability of resources), architecture evolved, showcasing more sophisticated styles like the gothic, Victorian and the likes.

Starting the 20th century, we have come to know what architectural jargon may refer to as “modern architecture.” In architecture “modern” does not necessarily pertain to some thing contemporary. In fact it refers to the style in architecture prevalent in 1950’s to 1970’s.

Modern Architecture is the relatively new style in architecture that began to emerge in Western countries sometime after World War I. The phrase has come to refer to the architectural styles with simple forms and the elimination of the ornaments associated with the previous era’s styles. Modern Architecture came to be in the 20th century and although this style has been adopted by many big names in architecture, not many modern structures were built during the first half of the century. It was after the Second World War that this style has been seen especially in corporate buildings.

Some common characteristics of modern architecture include simplicity, lack of intricate details or ornament, focus on functionality and material, and expressed structure. Modern architecture though is not limited to any fixed characteristics and in fact, a style that is still being debated about.

Looking into Modern Architecture 2 OF 2

There are also a number of theories as for the origin of modern architecture. Some say that architecture is intertwined with the society and politics, thus, this style evolved as a result of social and political revolutions.

Some scholars think that technology and industrialization were the primary factors that led to the advent of modern architecture. It was said that the availability of materials like iron, concrete and glass determined the advent of modern architecture. This style is said to be an off-shoot of the Industrial revolution.

Some theories regard modern architecture as a reaction to the previous era’s elaborate and lavish styles like the Victorian and Edwardian Art Nouveau, The end result, they say, was mainly a product of preference above anything else.

Looking through history, modern architecture began to manifest around early 1900’s when architects began to dabble on integrations of traditional precedents with the newly discovered technological possibilities. As industrialization continued, the traditional touch eventually disappeared and the functional and sleek modern structures began to conquer the world of architecture.

As me move into the 21st century, many new styles emerge. Modern Architecture is now drawing concerns from many enthusiasts in terms of preservation. Although modern structures are not as romantic and not near to being as attractive as traditional architecture, a group of people who call themselves modernists fight for the cause of preserving modern buildings.

Pursuing a Career in Architecture 2 OF 2

Flexibility: The career is definitely not the usual office-hours kind of job. From the university to the actual architectural work, this line of work would cost you extra hours. A lot of times, to beat a deadline, all-nighters are required in this kind of field. Aside from flexibility, this also calls for good time management skills.

Organizational skills: It is important to have no difficulties working with a team in this line of work. Architecture in itself is only a part of the big picture of construction. Similarly, in an architectural project, a number of minds and pairs of hands are needed to make it effective.

Ability to take criticism: It is also vital to have the skill, or perhaps the virtue, to take in criticism with a grain of salt, not allowing it to intimidate you, at the same time, using it to harness your skill. Composure and confidence in the midst of presentations is important. Also, you must bear in mind, since architecture may be considered a form of art, it does not focus on “right” or “wrong” answers. Disagreements are natural occurrences in most fields of work anyway.

Architecture in itself is a broad field and an architect may specialize in a number of areas like historic preservation, landscape, structure etc.

The good thing about being an architect is that you can choose to keep on improving yourself. You may explore options like joining a private firm, working for a public sector, exploring interior design or joining a construction company to mention a few. Some may even choose to study further in fields like engineering, graphic design, urban development and even law.

Pursuing a Career in Architecture 1 OF 2

A career in architecture may sound really fancy and exciting, but like most careers, there are a lot of factors and requirements to consider if you want to be an architect.

A career in architecture, much like many professions, requires a degree in the field and a considerable amount of time of internship. For many countries, a license to be a professional architect may only be acquired after passing a series of licensure exams. Aside from these requirements, a lot of factors are still in play in determining a career in this field.

Here are a few things essential to a successful career as an architect:

Passion: Although passion alone does not spell success, a genuine passion about buildings, structure and built environment is very important for those who want to pursue a long term career in architecture. A so-so interest would most likely wane during the crunch time in school and training since competition in this field could be steep and the work needed may be draining. Skill of course is important, but skill, in reality may be acquired while drive is not easily produced.

Creativity: Creativity encompasses drawing, three-dimensional model making, conceptualizing, and even seemingly unrelated tasks like essay writing (some courses require complex essays especially those dealing with theory and history). Dealing with structural design and aesthetics, architecture demands a lot of creativity. In fact, many schools require a portfolio exhibiting your creativity as part of admissions. In the job, creativity combats the boredom of what would be otherwise a monotonous job. Above all, creativity is one major key to stand out as an above-average architect.

Down the Architecture Memory Lane: Evolution of Architecture 2 OF 2

During the Classical period (5th and 4th centuries BCE), architectural books were written and in fact became canons in building structures. Notable canons are the Vaastu Shastra (India), the Kao Gong Ji (China) and the writings of Vitruvius. Around this time, architecture in Asia began to show notable details especially the variety in Buddhist architecture. Asian religions also developed a form of architecture intended to enhance nature and the environment.

During the Medieval period, Spain, North Africa and Middle East arose as models of architecture in terms of stylistics. Architects were not recognized for their work but the guilds of master builders, architects and artisans were organized to be signed for construction.

It was during the Renaissance that the architects were associated with their designs brought about by the period’s stress on the individual. Popular architects that excelled were Brunelleschi, Alberti, Michelangelo, and Palladio among others.

As science became more and more specialized, architecture and engineering began to take their distinctions and architecture took on more stress on the aesthetics. In fact, during the 19th century, architectural schools trained architects to focus more on the beauty of the drawings rather than the feasibility of the structure.

It was during the Industrial Revolution that architecture was taken into the level of mass production. With the advent of machine production, what was once expensive craftsmanship become more accessible to the middle class. More ornaments are used for common architecture. One of the most popular styles of this era is the Victorian. From the Industrial revolution sprung forth styles like Bauhaus, International, and Postmodern. Later on, the ornaments were used less and less in architecture, developing what we now know as modern architecture.

Down the Architecture Memory Lane: Evolution of Architecture 1 OF 2

In these modern times, architecture is perceived as both a Science and an Art. It requires precision and skill in terms of planning a structure and securing its functionality. Similarly, the aesthetic touch is vital to the overall design. Architectural works are often considered works of art in themselves.

Architectural designs are also markers of eras, cultures, and even politics. Looking into historical facts, civilizations are determined primarily by their architectural accomplishments. Take the pyramids of Egypt for example— these architectural structures in themselves speak of so much about the culture, the society and the period of time when they were built. The same goes for the Roman Coliseum.

Architecture evolved out of the basic need of man for shelter, security and social interaction and the resources available (man power and materials). Architecture later on became a craft, one that man’s highly-skilled mind has mastered and developed through time. Man discovered materials and developed techniques through a process of trial and error. By oral traditions, these were passed on and established a craft that is now termed as “vernacular architecture” or a form of unrefined architecture that arose out of need and available resources.

Architecture paved the way to the phenomena of urbanism in many civilizations like the early civilizations of Mohenjo Daro of Pakistan. Architecture also became a part of human kind’s spirituality and attempts to give substance to the unseen as demonstrated in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. Ancient Persia was also a civilization that exhibited exemplary architecture that spoke much of the politics during that era.
